Materials from SCIN, the UK’s largest independent materials library.
Materials are all around us. Everything is made of something. A generation of makers and innovators has begun to push material boundaries, challenging design, making and manufacturing. Textures, colours, and capacities are combined, producing exciting new materials that interact with users and consumers.
This exhibition explores exciting materials and material properties that have become key within architecture and design: traditional materials that are made to look like something they are not; everyday materials like human hair and salt, which are being applied in architecture and fashion with thought provoking results; and materials which until now were regarded as waste, given a makeover and reintroduced as unique materials or interiors and product design.
Design is no longer just an innovation of form but also a creative use of materials and how their intrinsic properties can reach full design potential.
Exhibition tours: Daily at 11am and 2pm (free, no booking required).
Material demonstrations: Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 November, 12pm and 3pm (free, no booking required).
