Deadgood Residency

Following on from their London residency, for two weeks Newcastle based Deadgood will be residing at Workpattern on Newcastle’s Quayside; showcasing a carefully curated selection of products from their cutting edge collection of modern British furniture, lighting and interior accessories.

New products on show will include Harvey Modular, the Tree Table, the Tyneside Lounger and Woody, alongside some familiar favourites in striking new finishes. They’ll also be showcasing items from the 2015 Accessories Collection.

2015 MART

We are pleased to announce the open call for submissions of work to be included in the 2015 Design Event MART. Design Event invites submissions of innovative and high quality design-led work from furniture, surface, textile, lighting, illustration, product, jewelry and fashion accessory designers and makers based in the North East, North West and Yorkshire & Humber.

About Design Event

Design Event is a not-for-profit design-led organisation existing to support and promote design in the North of England. Each year, Design Event run a programme of activity that promotes and showcases design and supports designers. In February 2015 Design Event were awarded the Homes and Gardens design award for best backer of british design.

About Design Event MART

Design Event MART is a curated selling exhibition showcasing the best in contemporary design from the North of England. 2015 Marks Design Event’s tenth birthday and we will be celebrating in style by holding this year’s Design Event MART in a beautiful grade II* listed building in Newcastle’s city centre. In 2013 Design Event MART was held at Globe Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, and attracted 1,500 visitors. Exhibiting designers achieved on-site and post-event sales exceeding £40,000. The event has received extensive press coverage in both regional and national publications including features in Design Week,  Living ETC and The Independent. Four exhibitors were presented with awards nominated by; Confessions of a Design Geek, Formica and British by Design.

About Design Event MART 2015

Design Event MART 2015 will take place from 21-25 October 2015 with an opening event and awards ceremony on 20 October. We will also host an architects’ breakfast in partnership with the RIBA on 22 October. The exhibition will showcase the work of 15-25 designers from the North of England working in a range of design disciplines, in a stunning grade II* listed venue in Newcastle’s city centre, not usually open to the public.

Where you come in!

We are now seeking applications from designers interested in exhibiting at Design Event MART 2015. Design Event MART is open to designers living and working across the North of England (North East, North West and Yorkshire & Humber). Designers producing innovative new work from all design disciplines including; furniture, surface, textile, lighting, illustration, product, jewellery, fashion accessory and print-based design will be considered


In order to ensure the exhibition is diverse, engaging and provides maximum opportunity to the designers involved, we are looking for innovative work at various stages of production including; new prototypes, one-off pieces and commissions and batch produced items. We will accept applications from designers living and working in the North of England; North East, North West and Yorkshire & Humber. Submissions of products that are the result of a collaboration between 2 or more designers are welcome

Work submitted:

– can relate to any design discipline, and use any materials and tools for manufacture provided that products have a high quality finish

– should not have been widely exhibited in the North of England or as part of previous Design Event MARTs

– should ideally have selling potential either as a ‘carry out’ item or be available to order.  However, a small number of innovative prototypes may be included

– must represent the designer’s original ideas and be non-derivative

Submission and Selection

Applications must be submitted by 12 April 2015

Selected designers will be informed by 30 April 2015

Selected designers must submit a high quality image of their product by 1 June 2015

Terms and Conditions

  • Design Event will cover the costs of the exhibition including exhibition build, graphics, promotion, staffing of the event
  • Design Event will undertake a national and regional PR campaign
  • Design Event will design, curate and install the exhibition
  • Exhibiting designers will be able to show up to 5 products (selected by Design Event) and will have their products available for sale in a pop-up shop within the exhibition
  • All products exhibited and available for sale will be selected and displayed by Design Event
  • Applications must be submitted with the £15 Application fee which goes towards costs of administration and selection process.
  • Exhibiting designers will be required to pay an exhibitor fee of £155 including VAT.  Full payment or a 50% instalment of the fee must be paid within 6 weeks of receiving an offer to exhibit
  •  Exhibiting designers will retain100% of sales of exhibition pieces made as part of the exhibition Additional pieces may be selected for the pop up shop and Design Event will take 40% commission on these additional selected pieces.
  •  Exhibiting designers will be responsible for bringing their products to the exhibition venue and removing them at the close of the exhibition at dates and times agreed with Design Event
  • Exhibiting designers will be responsible for providing images of their work and information on themselves and their practice for marketing and interpretation purposes.  This information is to be provided in a timely manner and in the specified format
  • If possible, exhibitors will be present for the duration of the exhibition


Selected designers will receive:

·       a dedicated exhibition space from 21-25 October with an opening event on 20 October

·       The opportunity to present their work to architects at the RIBA partnered Architects’ breakfast

·       inclusion in Design Event national and regional press campaign

·       coverage through Design Event e-bulletins and social media activity

·       consideration for Design Event Awards 2015

·       100% of sales of exhibition works made at the exhibition

·       60% of sales of additional shop pieces

·       exposure to regional commissioners, specifiers, retailers and buyers

·       inclusion in web directory on Design Event website for 1 year

Things to Consider

This application asks you to submit images of your product (s).  If you are selected to exhibit at Design Event MART, we will request that you supply high quality photographs of your product or a high quality prototype version by 1 June 2015.  Submitting images when requested will maximise national promotional opportunities for your work

Design Event may contact you for further information to support your application in advance of the deadline for confirming the outcome of your application.  A prompt and full response to these requests will strengthen your application

Harvest is Ouseburn Coffee Company’s canteen and coffee house.

The interior was developed in house and echoes the classic elements of the OCC brand – with a fresh, simple and classic design.

The Ouseburn Coffee team wanted a domestic and personal feel to the space – reminiscent of a family kitchen, and aimed to create a neighbourhood space that was spacious and calm and invited people to stay longer.

The large windows flood the space with light, emphasised further by the white walls and floor. This expanse of white is contrasted by the central kitchen and island, made from reclaimed dark wood paneling form a local school, square edged steel supports and black laminate ply worktops. The main island is slightly lower than standard specifications to be reminiscent of gathering round a kitchen table.

This simplicity of materials and focus on functionality is echoed in the kitchenware that includes natural string bags to hold fruit, stoneware and bamboo vessels and wire baskets for bread. The perfect partner to their freshly roasted coffee packaged in kraft paper bags with typographic labels.

Design Event are thrilled to have won the 2015 Homes and Gardens design award for best ‘Backer of British Design’.Judges included Barbara Chandler, Mathew Hilton, Nick Munro, Amelia Thorpe, David Fisher, Lucio Longoni, Ruth Aram, Robin Levien, Emma Thomas, Giles Kime, Linda Clayton, Jimmy MacDonald and Deborah Barker.The award was presented by Barbara Chandler and Tom Dyckhoff at a ceremony at the British Museum this week. The judges commented that Design Event was ‘an excellent champion of Excellence’.
‘Homes and Gardens is such a wonderful publication and has been featuring inspiring interiors since 1919.’ said Karen Nairstone. ‘ Winning this award highlights the importance of supporting british designers and the work that Design Event does to showcase inspiring and innovative work by designers from across the north of England.’
Other winners include Stuart Carey, originally from Newcastle for his semi-porcelain stoneware; fellow northerner Carmel Allen, creative director at Heals for retailer of the year, Michael Anasstides for his string light for Flos, Eleanor Pritchard textiles and Samuel Chan for his Kerning sideboard. Bierrex smoke and tap house is the first in our series highlighting well designed spaces, and the latest Newcastle offering from the De Giorgi family. As to be expected, Bierrex lives up to the excellent design of their other establishments including Alvinos, Secco, intermezzo, Popolo, Paradiso, 9Bar Coffee and dAt bAr.
Formerly Popolo Bar, the space has been totally redesigned by Joe De Giorgi who collaborated with Xsite architecture, Dirty hands Co, and RASKL design studio to create a truly bespoke interior.
As you enter Bierrex your eye is immediately drawn to the central bar, produced by RASKL design studio and crafted from Siberian larch and black Valchromat. At the centre of the bar is an ‘Altar of Beer’, featuring 30 craft beers on tap.

‘The site is a corner site and therefore has lots of natural light and we wanted to capitalise on this and use light natural materials’ said Joe. ‘We wanted a contrast to the dark colours used in most bars and to echo the craft and artisan elements of the beers and menu to create symbiosis across all elements of the venue and ensure we were offering the right food in the right space.’

Inspiration for the project came from a visit to Torst bar in New York. ‘The mix of white marble, wood and brass, and both new and reclaimed materials worked so well in the space’ states Joe.

‘Our aim with Bierrex was minimal interference with the beer, food and materials to create a holistic experience.’

This use of natural materials is evident in the warm wood tones of the Siberian larch bar which are echoed in the parquet flooring, tapered table bases and slatted curved benches also made by RASKL design studio. ‘RASKL have a very unique approach and are really passionate about new materials, innovations and construction techniques. We have the same vocab for discussing design ideas and they’re a pleasure to work with’.

These craft elements, are complimented by strong graphic details including signage and large wall murals,– thanks to Dirty Hands Co.

‘Dirty Hands Co have worked all over the world and bring a wealth of new ideas to every project they work on. This is the third venue we’ve collaborated on with them and they’re always great to work with.’

The light and airy feel of the bar upstairs is contrasted by the Poison Cabinet basement bar below. The basement bar features black valchromat furniture throughout with subtle larch detailing and mock cleavers for door handles in polished stainless steel.

‘We have so much home grown talent here in the North East that are now working all over the world, so it’s great to be working with them on local projects and great to be able to see them enjoying the bar afterwards!

Design Event are delighted to have been shortlisted for the 2015 Homes and Gardens design awards in the category of ‘Backer of British Design’. Previous winners have included Karin Beate Phillips managing director of the European Design Group and Norman Tempest of Royal Stafford.

Joining Design Event on the shortlist are The New Craftsmen and Soane Britain. Winners will be announced in the April issue of Homes and Gardens magazine.

We are also delighted to see Daniel Schofield shortlisted in the ‘Use of materials’ category for his Tarnish Range. Daniel launched his Tarnish Range with Design Event at the London Design Festival in 2014.

Heal’s has a long history of working with emerging design talent,and their annual Heal’s Discovers initiative highlights the brand’s commitment to design education by discovering and nurturing the next generation of designers. This year they are offering designers and design students the opportunity to submit designs for the dining room – be it furniture (dining tables or seating), homeware (crockery and serveware) or even textiles (table cloths, runners etc.) Three final winning designs will be selected and put into production and the designers will receive a royalty for every item sold. They will be launched as part of the Heal’s Autumn/Winter campaign during the London Design Festival in September 2015.

David Irwin, Josh South and Phillip Luscombe (Rickard stool pictured above)are already flying the flag for Northern designers working with Heals.

In September 2014 Design Event showcased work by ten designers from across the North of England at designjunction.

Showcasing the very best in furniture, lighting and product design from around the world, designjunction presents world-class brands striking a balance between creative and commercial, offering a much-needed alternative to the traditional trade show during the London Design Festival.
Over the five day period the show saw more than 25,000 visitors at London’s iconic Sorting Office, making designjunction 2014 the biggest yet. Our stand was designed by Xsite architecture, and Design Event exhibited alongside more than 180 other brands, 35 pop-up shops, onsite eateries, live flash factories, a dedicated lighting show, a leading seminar programme, charity auction installation and four floors of design products.
