PECHA KUCHA

Live Theatre, Newcastle

18 June 2009, 7.15pm arrival for 7.30pm start

TWELVE ENTREPRENEURS from the worlds of architecture, design, advertising and business in the North East will be taking to the stage for a unique Pecha Kucha Night.

Pecha Kucha Nights are a global concept, born in Japan, which bring together creative and inspirational speakers who share their ideas, passions, inspirations and show their work in public.

The event in June celebrates creativity in the North East in a unique fashion. Pecha Kucha Nights follow a dynamic structure – each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds – giving a total of 6 minutes 40 seconds for each speaker before the floor moves on.

With no brief, presentations can be as obscure or as sane as the speaker chooses, often ranging from things that inspire them, holiday snaps or favourite books, to things they can’t stand.

Matthew Jarratt, Arts Council England, North East, said: “The Pecha Kucha talks introduce speakers from across design disciplines and explore some of the stories behind their inspiration and ideas. The format of the evening is fast-paced and entertaining, providing a playful insight into the minds of some of the region’s creative business leaders.”

Speakers confirmed so far include Jocelyn Maxfield (Serenity in the City), Tim Mosedale and Jenny Gillatt (Mosedale Gillatt), Henry Amos (Bright Blue Studios), Miles Thurlow  and Paul Moss (Workplace Gallery), Ira Lightman (Artist), Julie Drummond (Drummond Central), and Julian Leighton (Orange Bus), Mark Elliott (DigitalCity), Nick James (James Design and Mushroom Works), Ian Brown (Fresh Element) and Stuart Varrall (Fluid Pixel Studio).

Pecha Kucha Newcastle is brought to the region by Design Event on behalf of Arts Council England and the North East England Office Brussels to celebrate creativity and entrepreneurship during the European Year of Creativity and Innovation. The event is also part of this year’s North East Festival of Architecture.

The events are devised and shared by Klein Dytham architecture. Since they began Pecha Kucha events in their gallery-bar SuperDeluxe in Tokyo in 2003, the word has spread. Events now run in over 100 Cities across the world all with the commitment to share design practice in creative environments.

Tickets are free, but must be booked in advance, and are available from Live Theatre, www.live.org.uk / 0191 232 1232.

* Please note we will have an official photographer documenting this event who will be taking photographs for future use in Design Event marketing materials - members of the audience may be included in these shots.
